Two titles from the Supernova section come from Berlin this year: Tabu and Keep the Lights On

Awarded the Alfred Bauer Prize for the most innovative title in the Berlinale 2012 competition and winner of the International Critics Prize – FIPRESCI, the thrilling Tabu of the Portuguese Miguel Gomes is a love story and, at the same time, a meditation on cinematography and memory. The film critic turned into a director has been brought to the press attention after A cara que mereces (2004), presented last year at TIFF, within the Focus IndieLisboa section. His stylistic experiments brought him many awards, Aquele querido mês de agosto (2008) being one of his most cherished films.

Initially dropping in at Sundance, the film Keep the Lights On, directed by Ira Sachs, achieved the Teddy Award at Berlin, prize given to the best movie dealing with homosexuality. The drama follows through the years the tumultuous life of a couple of homosexuals from New York, a filmmaker (Zachary Booth) and a lawyer (Thure Lindhardt).

In the same section Supernova, there will be a screening of the Swedish film Play, awarded the Coup de Cœur Prize of the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs section, at Cannes 2011. Inspired by real events – children who systematically robbed other children in the center of the city of Göteborg, between 2006 and 2008 - Ruben Östlund builds an impressive drama in the cold light of day, about prejudices, racism and violence.

must-see film at TIFF is Na Hong-jin’s spectacular thriller, The Yellow Sea, screened within the Umbre/ Shadows section. Presented last year at Cannes in Un Certain Regard, the film is about a man who signs up for a job to kill only once for money and ends up being everybody’s target. It was box-office leader in South Korea, confirming the popularity gained by Na Hong-jin with his debut, The Chaser (2008).
