About Cluj
Cluj-Napoca is one of the largest urban centers in Romania, "home" for more than 500,000 permanent residents and students.
Cluj is a center of creative industries and home for a record number of IT companies, software development being one of the most productive local industries. The economy is based on both the investments of large international companies and start ups, Cluj being the Romanian city with the most companies set up by young people.
Actually, the young are feeling at home in Cluj, where there are nine public and private universities, including "Babes-Bolyai", the largest in Romania, with 167 majors.
The city has always enjoyed a rich cultural life – there are two theaters, two operas, a puppet theater, a philharmonic and various museums, from art, history and ethnography to zoology or pharmacy. The activity of these institutions is complemented by a youth-oriented and independent cultural scene, represented by associations of artists, galleries and a painting school with internationally recognized achievements.
The festival landscape has evolved a great deal; if, at its the first edition, Transilvania IFF was the only major event in the city, today, Cluj is called "the city of festivals" because of the large number of events taking place throughout the year, including two of the largest music festivals in Romania.
Cinema has a rich history in Cluj: in the early 20th century, the city hosted the first manifestations of this industry in Transylvania. In 1913, director Jeno Janovics started working with the Parisian movie house Pathé and shot more movies in the city.
Today, Cluj has the largest cinema in Romania and, for more than 10 years, sets national records of admissions. Investments in this area place the city among the few in Romania with cinemas not only in shopping centers, but also in the largest residential neighborhoods.
