Masterclasses and debates at Transilvania IFF

Every year, TIFF brings together the most important names in the Romanian cinema as well as international filmmakers, actors, producers, distributors and film critics.

Some of the high profile guests of TIFF 2013 are Nik Powell, director of Great Britain's National Film and Television School, vice-president of the European Film Academy council and member in the BAFTA board, Marie-Pierre Vallé, acquisitions manager for Wild Bunch, Grainne Humphreys, director of Dublin International Film Festival, Mirsad Purivatra, director of Sarajevo Film Festival, producers Mike Downey (CEO Film & Music Entertainment, UK), Philippe Bober (Coproduction Office, France), Jean des Forêts (Petit Film, France), Clare Downs, script consultant for European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs, Luxemburg, Jean-Pierre Gardelli - Managing Partner and acquisitions manager for Bodega Films, France, Sirkka Möller, coordinator of the script development workshop within Berlinale Talent Campus, Marta Lamperová, director of the Production Department of FAMU (Prague), Nikolaj Nikitin, Berlin Film Festival delegate and Hanka Kastelicová – executive producer within HBO Europe's Documentary Film Department.

Romanian filmmakers and aficionados will also meet Jiří Menzel, recipient of the TIFF 2013 Excellence award recipient, DoP Ed Lachman (Paradise Trilogy, by Ulrich Seidl), director Pablo Berger (Blancanieves, 2012), Sebastián Lelio (director of the Berliale-awarded film Gloria), György Pálfi (Taxidermia), member of the main jury, writer/director David Lambert (Hors les Murs), actress Franziska Petri, producer Lynda Myles, director Denis Côté (Vic et Flo ont vu un ours). 

TIFF guests will get together at Piano Cazola, on June 6, between 10 AM and 4 PM for a round table focusing on regional cooperation and new models for the distribution and promotion of films and on June 7, between 11 AM and 1 PM for two presentations concerning film-financing. The first presentation, supported by the French National Film centre will be held by Emmanuelle Deprats, coordinator of the Aide aux Cinémas du Monde program, while the second will be held by Agnes Havas, director of the Hungarian Film Fund. On June 6, 12.30 PM, at TIFF Lounge, filmmakers and producers will discuss about The Explorer (directed by Titus Muntean, Xantus Gabor), a documentary project from Fundației Arte Vizuale. 

This year's trainers for Transilvania Talent Lab (TTL) are Nik Powell (development), Jean des Forêts and Sirkka Möller (production) and Marta Lamperová (marketing, distribution and cultural management). Some of the TTL master-classes, while dedicated to the 20 official participants, while be opened to the general audience. The entrance is free. All master-classes will take place in the Napoca 15 mansard.

Master-class Nik Powell, one of the most famous and influential British producers, director of the National Film and Television School, vice-president of the European Film Academy, president of the Film Committee and member in the BAFTA board. In the 70s, he established Virgin Records and, a decade later, Palace Productions (Neil Jordan's Company of Wolves and multiple Oscar-nominee Crying Game).

Presentation focusing on crowd-funding options held by Oana Radu & Elvira Lupșa, members of Romanian Film Initiative, based on the analysis of the Making Waves Festival in New York.

Wednesday, June 5, 15.00 - 16.30
Master-class Ed Lachman, award-winning director of photography of films by Werner Herzog, Wim Wenders, Steven Soderbergh, Todd Haynes, Sofia Coppola, Robert Altman, Todd Solondz, Ulrich Seidl. He is also the co-director, together with Larry Clark, of the highly controversial Ken Park (2002).

Thursday, June 6, 12.00 - 14.30
Master-class focusing on film scores held by Romanian musician and composer Adrian Enescu, famous for over 65 Romanian and European film scores and recipient of a TIFF 2013 Lifetime Achievement award.

Thursday, June 6, 16.00 - 17.00
Master-class Sebastián Lelio, one of the most esteemed contemporary filmmakers and director, among others, of the feature film Gloria (2013 Silver Bear for Best Actress in Berlin). His films were selected and awarded in Cannes, Locarno, San Sebastian and Berlin. Lelio won the 2007 Transilvania IFF trophy with La Sagrada familia, and the 2010 TIFF IFF FIPRESCI award with Navidad.

Between June 1 and 8, journalist Mihnea Măruţă will be your daily host from 5 PM, at TIFF Lounge (Unirii Square).
